Insomnia can be a truly debilitating condition, having a huge effect on both your physical health and your mental well being. Indeed, when you are going through your days in a state of near constant fatigue all areas of your life can suffer, from your professional commitments to your personal relationships.
A lack of sleep has been linked to a wide array of health issues, form depression and anxiety to weight gain (try the anabolic cooking plan if this is becoming an issue for you), so if you are finding that you're having trouble getting enough shut eye, it's important to take every possible step you can to avoid compounding the situation.
One of the simplest steps you can take is to start treating your sleeping space differently. For instance, you may be in the habit of checking your emails on your phone before going to bed, or you may have a desk in your room you use for taking on work. Doctors suggest that, aside from sleeping, the only other activity you should undertake in the bedroom is sex. Research has shown it's much harder to turn off in a space that you associate with stressful situations, as opposed to one you use exclusively for relaxing.
Another obvious measure is to try and cut back on stimulants such as caffeine, especially just before going to bed. Making sure you're getting enough exercise can be another good way of ensuring you end up feeling tired enough to drift away at the end of the day.
If problems persist, it's important that you go and see your GP, who may be able to help you asses the root cause of the problem. You may benefit from undergoing a course of behavioural cognitive therapy; a sort of 'talking cure' that can help you work through thought processes that may be keeping you up at night.
As a last resort you could make temporary use of sleeping pills for a short time. They will treat the symptoms of insomnia (namely, they'll help you to actually fall asleep). However, they won't do anything to tackle the root cause of your problems. On top of this, sleep induced by pills can leave you feeling groggy rather than rested.
